Do you remember what you got for Christmas when you were 10 years old? I’ll be honest enough to tell you that I can’t. But I can remember how we celebrated Christmas that year… about the super humongous snowman my brothers and I made with some neighborhood kids.

We were going to contact the local newspaper to take a picture because we were sure it was the hugest one ever, but a car that couldn’t stop at the intersection across the street from where he stood in our yard crashed right through his tummy and completely destroyed him.

Now that my brothers and I are adults, I love to go fly fishing with my oldest brother. We’ve gone multiple times in the mountains of Colorado, but I couldn’t tell you about the fish we caught by number or size.

What I can tell you is about the laughter we shared and the sense of “home” I felt being with him and his son, my nephew.

At this time of year, we worry so much about the turkey and the dishes to be served at dinner, or the amount, or the cost, or the proliferation of presents that end up under the tree when that isn’t what will be remembered.

It will be the laughter around the table, the stories shared about family myths and legends and the love. Love will always be more remembered than the cost of a gift or the size of it all.

Love, family, joy, thankfulness, and thanksgiving – that is what we should be concentrating on.
