Fridge Cleaning 101

Unless you’re like Danny Tanner from “Full House,” loving every moment of cleaning, the thought of cleaning out the fridge makes you already gag. It’s a job that you know needs to get done, but you wish you could volunteer someone else for it. Good News: it doesn’t have to be a dreadful, whole-day project. With the right tools (and these helpful tips), the chore could be one you, dare I say, could get use to?! It sounds like blogger Emily Abbate has got it down to 20 minutes, so let’s see if her tips can get you in and out too.

1. Get the right materials: You’re going to want to have a few items at your disposal besides a warm bucket of soapy water. We suggest an all-purpose cleaner with some sort of mild disinfectant (think bleach), a sponge specifically for your fridge, a toothbrush, and some reusable cleaning rags.

2. Remove the goods: Take all of the contents of your refrigerator out. This will give you total access to all of the sections, including the bins that line the door. As you remove foods from the fridge, throw items away that are past their prime.

3. Remove the drawers: You want to make sure that you take the drawers out that are removable, and then wash both them and the areas that are underneath where crumbs and gook typically end up. You can clean the drawers with soap and warm water in your sink.

4. Tackle the interior: Using your all-purpose cleaner, spray the surfaces inside your refrigerator and then wipe down the walls and each shelf. Make sure to get into the crevices and seams, and don’t forget the door cracks!

5. Replace the food: When placing items back inside the fridge, make sure you’re putting them in the proper place. Organize fruits and vegetables in separate bowls so they’re not rolling around, and place cold cuts and beverages in the appropriate places.

6. Don’t forget the baking soda: Baking soda helps keep your fridge smelling fresh by neutralizing odors. Replace the baking soda in your fridge once every three months.

7. Last but not least, the outside: Find the right cleaner for your specific type of fridge (whether it be stainless steel, plastic, or something else), and wipe down the outside using long sweeping, circular motions.
